New York multi-cultural genre-bending duo, Frenchy and the Punk (New York) is made up of hardcore punk veteran guitarist Scott Helland (bassist of Deep Wound - with J Mascis and Lou Barlow, Outpatients) and French-born singer/percussionist Samantha Stephenson. They pound out Cabaret Folk Punk. Helland's signature rhythmic and melodic guitar looping style create a driving and expansive sonic landscape that perfectly blends with Stephenson's powerful 'Siouxsie-esque' vocals and percussion. It has always seemed as if there were two Cheryl Wheelers, with fans of the New England songwriter relishing watching the two tussle for control of the mic. There is poet-Cheryl, writer of some of the prettiest, most alluring and intelligent ballads on the modern folk scene. And there is her evil twin, comic-Cheryl, a militant trend defier and savagely funny social critic. The result is a delightful contrast between poet and comic.In 1983, Cheryl released a self-produced EP called Newport Songs. Her first two albums Cheryl Wheeler in 1986, and Half a Book in 1991 were on an independent label, North Star. That company also released a promo tape called Live and Otherwise in 1987. This was a bonus tape that was sent to anyone who filled out a survey form that was included in a number of the North Star albums. THAT WAS JUST THE BEGINNING…. Cheryl is known for her emotional roller coaster entertainment style. Hilariously funny intros to songs and life stories that formed her songs. Always a show to remember with a smile.
